Boon the Clouded Leopard at Zoo Atlanta
Zoo Atlanta welcomes Boon, an 8-year-old female clouded leopard, as a new ambassador for a vulnerable wild cat species.
Boon the Clouded Leopard at Zoo Atlanta introduces visitors to one of Asia's most distinctive and elusive wild cats.
Boon, an 8-year-old female clouded leopard, arrived from the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere on a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan. Clouded leopards are not true leopards; they belong to their own genus, Neofelis, and are known for climbing adaptations such as long balancing tails and rotating ankle joints that allow them to descend trees headfirst.
Native to forests across parts of Asia, clouded leopards are classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Zoo Atlanta presents Boon as both a memorable visitor highlight and an ambassador for a species facing habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade and poaching threats in the wild.
